Siemens ships 1st ‘Made in KSA’ turbine to Jazan

In line with Saudi Aramco's ‘In-Kingdom Total Value Add’ program, Siemens has delivered the first shipment out of ten locally-produced gas turbines that will drive the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant in Jazan. With an installed capacity of 4,000 MW, the IGCC will be the largest facility of its kind to be fuelled with gasified refinery residues.

Ten gas turbines, specially designed for syngas, will power the mega power plant (4 GW) and generate 600 tons of high pressure steam per hour to Aramco's refinery. Residues from the refinery will be used to fuel the plant, enhancing its overall energy efficiency.

Arrival of the first gas turbine shipment coincided with Aramco’s contract award ceremony for the $13.3 billion Fadhili gas processing project. Engineering contracts were awarded to France’s ENGIE and Saudi Electric Company (SEC), with the target to complete construction in late 2019. The Fadhili project also features a 1,500 MW gas power plant.

Commenting on the Made in KSA’ turbines for the Jazan IGCC, Siemens chief technology officier Siegfried Russwurm underlined that the German OEM “built these high-tech gas turbines in Saudi Arabia with local talent” – contributing to the realisation of the Kingdom's Vision 2030.

Siemens is seen by Saudis as a leader in building fuel-saving technologies; over the past decades it supported the profitable operation of Saudi power plants by installing best-in-class efficiency standands.

Active in the Kingdom for more than 85 years, with more than 2,000 employees today, Siemens in Saudi Arabia- together with E.A. Juffali and Brothers – underlined their “continued commitment and contribution to the development in Saudi Arabia.”
