Modules for the first heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) for Siemens’ mega-project in Egypt have begun their journey from South Korea to the Beni Suef power plant. On its arrival in mid-September, the boiler will be installed at the 4.8GW plant which is due to be fully operational in 2017.
Beni Suef will be the world's biggest CCGT complex, capable to provide electricity to approximately 15 million Egyptians. The plant will initially be operated in simple-cycle mode, while HRSGs are gradually being added to the plant to convert it into combined-cycle mode.
NEM, as part of Siemens, is delivering a total of 24 HRSGs for this mega-project in Egypt, which includes a total of three 4.8 GW turnkey combined cycle power plants in Beni Suef, Burullus and New Capital.
Journey started in Ulsan, Korea
Having started their 5-week journey at South Korea’s port of Ulsan, the modules for the first HRSGs are now headed to Tanjung Langsat Port in Malaysia. Here, they stop shortly to co-load main steel and casings – delivered for the same project to the Port of Adabiya on the Red Sea.
Onshore, the several ton cargo will be transported to the Beni Suef CCGT, which will be powered by eight Siemens SGT5-8000H gas turbines. In each of the eight HRSGs, the exhaust gas from these turbines will be used to produce high-pressure steam and drive the four steam turbines installed in the power plant.
NEM’s overall project scope for the three CCGTs include engineering, manufacturing and delivery of 24 vertical triple-pressure reheat once-through HRSGs.
Siemens said “this type of HRSG was chosen for its fast and flexible startup and relatively light weight and small footprint.” Each boiler contains 24 modules and approximately 14,000 single tubes, each around 20 meters in length.
