A new 484 MW power plant comprising of two 162-MW gas units and one 160-MW steam unit has been brought online by MAPNA in Kahnouj, southeast of Iran.

The Eur310 million project was entirely privately financed, MAPNA said.

Construction of the Shobad power plant started in early 2014. The first gas unit was delivered in early 2015 and the second gas unit was commissioned in spring of the same year. The steam unit was synchronised to the national grid in August 2016, MAPNA said, adding that a consortium of MAPNA subsidiaries led by MAPNA combined cycle power plants construction & development company was in charge of the project.

“Since mid-2013, we have added more than 5700 MW of new power capacity to the national grid, and an extra 500 MW by upgrading older units” commented MAPNA's President Abbas Aliabadi, adding “MAPNA is determined to carry out construction of steam units for combined cycle power plants.”

The project is part of plans to expand generation capacity in the country, with Iran's ministry of power aiming to install some 3300 MW of new capacity “in the upcoming years” MAPNA said.

Twenty-eight new power plants with a combined capacity of 5000 MW started operation across the country “simultaneous with the launch of Shobad power plant,” the company said, adding that among them there are its two new F-class combined cycle power plant in Bandar Abbas on the coast of the Persian Gulf and Assaluyeh power plant.
