Larsen & Toubro commissioned two gas turbines at separate power plants in Bangladesh at the end of March.

The first was a 150 MW Siemens turbine for Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB)’s 225 MW Combined Cycle (Dual Fuel) plant at Sikalbaha in Chittagong district; and the second was a 280 MW Mitsubishi-Hitachi turbine for North West Power Generation (NWPGCL) Combined Cycle Power Plant (360 MW) project at Bheramara in Kushtia district. Both units went live in late March.
BPDB awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Sikalbaha project to L&T in August 2014, and work on the project started in April 2015.
NWPGCL awarded the Bheramara project in July 2014 to Marubeni Corporation, which engaged L&T as its EPC subcontractor.
The power plants are designed to operate on natural gas as well as heavy fuel oil, and work on commissioning the steam turbines in combined cycle mode is at an advanced stage and should be complete later this year. Once finished, the two power plants will generate more than 635 MW on full load.
The commissioning of these plants will move Bangladesh a step closer to realising its target of 24000 MW installed capacity by 2021.
Larsen & Toubro is also executing an EPC subcontract for a 400 MW gas based power plant at Bibiyana, Bangladesh; to be ready for commissioning in 2018-19.
