MAN engines were installed at the Manikganj plant

Doreen Power, a privately-run utility in Bangladesh, has contracted MAN Diesel & Turbo to supply three 18V 48/60TS engines for a 56.7 MW baseload power plant near Dhaka. “48/60’s can be retrofitted to 51/60s without any major effort,” a MAN spokesman said, but cautioned about Bangladesh’s current gas supply constraints.

“As it stands, this plant will run on HFO only. The question of future gas supply is a very pressing one in Bangladesh as the country’s domestic own reserves will be exploited rather soon,” he told Gas to Power Journal.

MAN 18V48/60TS engine runs on HFO and achieves high energy-density and efficiencies due to its two-stage turbocharger – retrofits to dual-fuel capability is possibly. The three 18V 48/60TS engines will be delivered in October 2016 and are due for commissioning in 2017.

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the country’s state-owned energy provider, the will buy the entire electricity output of the plant.

Follow-up order

MAN recently completed two power stations in Nababganj and Manikganj, so the latest contract comes as a follow-up order. The two identically-build plants, also generating baseload power, are situated close to Dhaka and delivering electricity to the 17 million inhabitants of the metropolitan area. The engines for these first two power project were delivered to Doreen Power in June and August 2016.

“Bangladesh has evolved into a key market for us in the past few years. The Bangladesh government has introduced a state action plan to improve the country’s energy situation, which it is pursuing decisively,” Alexander Stöckler, head of global sales at MAN Diesel & Turbo commented, calling the latest order win “an endorsement of the success of the recently completed power stations in Nababganj and Manikganj.”

Moreover, a 58 MW power station was completed by MAN in June 2016 for Desh Energy and a 108 MW plant was completed in July for Maisha Group – both also supply electricity to the region around the capital city.
